Above Ground Pool Chlorine Generators

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

If you have an above ground pool and want to add a chlorinator there are some good choices and we will look into a few of them here.

ChlorEase by SmartPool. This one has been around a long time and is very economical. You can find it anywhere from $120 to $250 on the Internet. We have tested a few of them and unfortunately they don't last long. You will not have a hard time on the net finding negative feedback. We looked into this and have actually come to some conclusions.

  • The titanium plate surface area of the ChlorEase is about 15 square inches. It is a mesh  so you have to calculate the area by weight. The power supply is 6 volts, and 6 amps. Our test used the full 6 amps so basically 6 amps into 15 square inches has a current density of 0.4 amps/sq in. The titanium plates are typically rated at 10,000 hours at 0.2 amps / sq in. The plates are expensive so if you put a higher current into them you get more chlorine at less manufacturering cost, but a lower life of the product.
  • The salt requirement is 3200 to 3600 parts per million. This is one of the highest requirements of all chlorine generators on the market. But, to keep the titanium plate area as small as possible you need more salt if you don't care about the life of the plates.

ChlorSimple by ControlOMatic. This one is new and looks very promising.  There are no problems as the unit is new, but it looks like the folks at ControlOMatic have taken a different approach.

  • The titanium surface area is 27 sq in with a current density of 0.3 amps / sq in. You will not get 10,000 hours of chlorine production, but it should last three seasons.
  • The salt requirement for the ChlorSimple is only 2000, about half that of the Chlorease. We know that the Dough-Boy doesn't want you to put any salt in the pool as the sides are metal and most likely any above ground pool that has metal in the walls, the manufacturer will not want you to use salt.
